ON FEBRUARY 14, 2018, a teenager armed with an automatic firearm walked onto the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School (MSD) in Parkland, Florida, and began firing his weapon. The rampage lasted six minutes, and despite training, drills, and security measures at the school, he took the lives of 17 students and staff. The massacre in Parkland occurred in mid-February, just seven weeks into the new year—but it was the sixth school shooting of 2018. By the end of the year, there would be 24, with 114 people killed or injured. The tragic event that took place at MSD was not unique in America. What was unique was how the students responded.

The day after the tragedy, a group of surviving students came together to cry, mourn, and support each other. They also decided to take action. They were sick of it being accepted as “normal” for students to lose their lives to gun violence in school, and they didn’t want this to be just another school shooting.

They began by starting a Facebook page called #NeverAgain, as in: never again will something like this happen.
