CHAPTER 13

The next morning, I wake up early. At first I’m not sure that it even is morning, with the light being all strange here. Raven’s finishing up his watch, perusing the bookshelf. I think he’s decided that if no vampires struck in the wee hours of the morning, their opportunity has passed and they’re not going to come after us at six a.m.

North and Cain are on either side of me, asleep, and for a moment I just close my eyes and indulge myself in listening to the sound of their breathing. They’re warm, and solid, and they feel more real than anything else in the world.

I can’t possibly give them up or allow them to be hurt. I can’t ever lose them. And I’m going to do whatever it takes to make sure that my vision doesn’t come true—that I won’t ever be alone.

As much as I’d like to lie here and just bask in my mates, though, we do have to get up. We have to get going.

I stagger out of bed and to the bathroom to get myself ready. How do vampires make sure their hair is done well if they can’t see themselves in mirrors? Do they always have to have someone else do it for them?

Once I’m cleaned up, I rouse the men and make sure they take care of themselves, and then we have to meet with Malcolm. I’m not sure what the king’s plan is, but I hope that it’s better than the one we came up with. If Roanac gets rid of the vampire leadership then we’re all fucked.

Malcolm, Willow, and their two consorts are waiting for us in yet another room, not the throne room or dining room but what seems to be some kind of strategy room. Honestly, how many rooms does this damn castle have?

There’s a large table in the center with various maps spread out on it, and shelves with books and maps mixed in with more modern-day files and folders. At one wall is a desk that’s piled with papers alongside an open laptop. The combination of the old and the new is a bit disconcerting. But it’s another sign of how the vampires are moving forward into the future with this new king instead of staying stuck forever in the past.

“Good morning.” Willow smiles at us, looking completely refreshed. I can’t help but wonder what her night was like and it’s a struggle not to look down at her neck to see if there are fresh bite marks there. “How did you all sleep? We’re having breakfast brought to you here.”

“Oh, thank you.” North sounds a little startled at the hospitality, that vampires would remember we need to eat.

Given that apparently a bunch of humans live here to be willingly snacked on by vampires I don’t think this is such a crazy thing for them to have to remember as North might think.

“We’re working on our strategy for dealing with Roanac,” Malcolm says, gesturing at the maps.
