“Oh, that’s brilliant,” said Pietra, her eyes wide and her cheeks flushed with admiration. “Give a woman a spectacular purse that’s hexed, and you’ve got it made. She’s under your spell, so to speak, because she’s never letting that bag out of her sight. Wish I’d thought of it. It gets boring doing charms and hexes on baked goods. One bite, and they’re gone. Poof!”

“Wait—charms and hexes on baked goods? Like blueberry scones?” Jacqueline was outraged. “Have you ever—”

“Of course not,” Pietra replied, highly offended. “Not to you.” She flattened her lips and gave Jacqueline a quelling look.

“I did notice the purse,” said Andromeda thoughtfully. “But I missed the hex part. What gave it away, Z?”

“You were too busy sipping wine and flirting with that bald man with the dark beard—it was obviously dyed—to notice,” Zwyla told her. “He was a little young for you, don’t you think?”

“Well, at least I wasn’t hiding from Paul Bunyan,” retorted Andromeda. “Sneaking around the romance shelves, peering around the mysteries, darting behind the Harry Potters—”

“Oh, for the Good Mother’s sake, Andi, you don’t need to bring that up again,” Zwyla said with a huff. “He wasn’t even there, so your point is irrelevant—and besides, I was paying very close attention because I expected something to happen. As we all did. None of us thought Egala would go gently into that good night.” She gave Pietra a meaningful look.

“Wait…what? Paul Bunyan?” Jacqueline interrupted. “He was here again?” Had Mrs. Danvers picked up another fallen book after Jacqueline specifically told her not to? And how on earth could she have missed seeing Paul Bunyan?

“Again?” said Pietra.

“He was here a week or so ago, but I thought he left. Yesterday—at the party—was he here? I didn’t see him. Why were you hiding from him?” Jacqueline asked Zwyla.

“Good old Paul—and talk about massive hands! That guy’s got winners,” Andromeda said with a mischievous chuckle. “Anyway, Paulie’s got a thing for our Miss Z here,” she went on with a sly smile. “But he wasn’t here yesterday. He’s hard to miss.”

“He certainly is,” said Zwyla grimly. “How many times does a man have to hit his head on the door header before he learns to duck? The whole building shudders every time he does.”

“Well, if he wouldn’t wear his hair in a man-bun—” Andromeda began.

“Paul Bunyan likes you?” Jacqueline said to Zwyla, still trying to keep up with the bouncing conversation.

“Oh, he’s got it bad,” said Pietra with great relish. “The poor guy lumbers out of his book—ha, ha, lumbers; did you see what I did there?—whenever he can, hoping to catch a glimpse of Z.”

Well, that explained why he’d sat in the chair and stared out the window in the direction of Camellia House for two days.

“Just be glad he wasn’t here with Babe,” said Andromeda, stroking the fluffy, tawny-haired Sebastian, who remained in his stole-like position over her shoulders and accepted her attention as if it was his due. “That beast’s shit is the size of bricks…and I mean cinder blocks.
