I did eighty in a sixty, fuck a ticket! I had wondered if he would really send me his location. But by the time I had gotten into my car, he had.

“You never asked me why I tried to commit suicide.”

Since pulling up to his crib, I had been in the car with him, smoking. The effects of the indicia had calmed my nerves and gave me a false sense of confidence,

“I knew. At least I could assume why.”

My eyes darted toward him, confused.

“Jah had to tell me because they needed somebody to snatch up Miguel when he was released from the hospital.”

“That was you?” I asked with enlarged eyes.

He nodded slowly.

“So…. you know why they killed him?”

Though we had had countless conversations, he had never asked why I jumped. He only ensured that I was okay. Otherwise, our conversations were casual or us getting to know one another.

“Yeah. They only trusted me to get involved because Moe was out of the picture.”

I recoiled, staring out of the driver’s seat. Suddenly, I didn’t feel as confident and sexy in his presence. I feared that he was looking at me like that abused little girl that I had been my entire life.

“Aye.” But then I felt his hand on my thigh. My eyes went back to his. “You don’t have anything to be ashamed of. It happens more times than you think.”

I then saw a familiar darkness in his eyes.

“You?” I asked softly.

He nodded. “Yeah. My mama’s friend when I was like twelve.”

“I’m sorry.”

He shrugged. “It’s all good. I felt like a pimp, until I had a kid of my own and realized the depth of what she did to me.”

“You have a kid?” He had never talked about a kid, and I was too eager to change the subject.

“Yeah. He’s five and lives in Miami with his mother. I was sixteen and she was fourteen. Her parents kept me away from her and the baby because they knew I was in the streets. Then she got married last year and moved to Miami. Our relationship isn’t the best because she tries to let her husband be his father. It fucks with me so I don’t really talk about it.”

“Oh.”

His head tilted as he stared at me. “You good?”

“Yeah,” I assured him, smiling bashfully.

“I hate that nigga pushed you to try to kill yourself.”

“I hate it too. But I swear I changed my mind when I was falling. It makes me wonder how many people changed their mind but it was too late for them or it was nobody there to save them.”

He nodded. “You’re right. I’ve never thought about that. That’s some deep shit.”

“Thank you for being there.”

“Don’t thank me. It was a complete coincidence. I guess you should be thanking God for putting me in the right place at the right time.”

“I do. I thank Him for you every day.”

We shared a small smile before a thick tension appeared between us. It was suffocating. I was in awe of him.
