“I ask myself that question all the time. If this is what love feels like, then I wonder how it would feel when he hates me. I want to leave, but what's that going to prove in the end?” I ask before turning on my radio, letting Eric Benet and Tamia’s Spend My Life with You blast out of my speakers.

“That you’re a strong black woman. What’s that noise I hear all in the background?”

“Oh, I'm listening to Eric Benet and Tamia’s Spend My Life with you. You know that's my all-time favorite song ever.”

“I know, that’s why I ask. I also know you only listen to that song when he cheats on you. So, is that why you called me, Promise? Because he’s cheating on you.” She ask me.

“Somewhat,” I reply.

“Listen here, if you’re truly tired of him, and I mean tired, come on home. I miss your company and you’re cooking.” She laughs.

I laugh. “I’m coming.”

“Now, turn that music off. It's only causing you heartache and pain. Put on some Yolanda Adams or some Kirk Franklin, or some Smokie Norful. Now, that’s all music.”

“I’m turning it off now. And I am tired, Mrs. King, you just don’t know. I'm too tried to even try and work it out. Not this time. I’m done with this bullshit. I have a child on the way that needs love and happiness.”

“Now, that's the smartest thing I’ve heard you say since I've started talking to you. But, listen here, I have to go. I'm already late for my doctor’s appointment,” she informed me.

“Oh my God, are you okay?” Concern is in my voice.

“Yes, I’m okay. My doctor just wants to be sure all this mess is gone.”

“What mess?” I ask her.

“Lung cancer, child. But, don't worry. I'll be back before you know it. You hear me, Promise? I said don’t worry about me. Just come on home.”

“I have to go. I’ll talk to you later, Mrs. King. I love you.”

“I love you more,” she responds.

Hanging up, in my heart I have a feeling that I’ll never hear her voice again, no matter what she is telling me. Cancer is something that not many people overcome.

Not fully happy with the answers, I have to find out some answers to all my questions. I am tired of crying myself to sleep at night. I get up out the bed and leave the house, getting into the car and driving to the Dan Ryan.

Heading down South toward 71st Street, driving down Elizabeth, it doesn't take long before I spot her. My dope head, biological mother, So-Yung. In Korean, her name means happiness, but in America there is no happiness when dealing with her. I never understood why my grandmother even named her a Korean name when she is not even mixed with that bloodline. But, my name is Promise and if the baby turns out to be a girl her name will be Happy, so the unique names would not fall far from the tree.

“So-So, check it out,” I yell out the window as I pull up toward the building where she is at.
