Chapter 10
“Let me get that,” Elfreda said, moving to the other side of the car. “Wait, I said I’d get it.” Her hand landed on Karyn’s shoulder, stopping her from lifting the large plastic bag.
“It’s not heavy.” She relented and stepped aside. “It’s just a couple of pregnant lady tops and a book for Aunty.” After she’d mentioned her family to Elfreda, the woman had asked to meet her aunt. It took Karyn a couple of months, but once she started showing, and after seeing the ultra-sound, she’d taken her aunt and Elfreda to lunch.
The two women had hit it off. Whenever they went to the doctor, she and Elfreda would do some shopping, and then visit Aunt Lanie until the girls came home. Elfreda had all but adopted the girls as her grandkids and they loved her. Plus, their relationship had changed. She and Elfreda had an easy-going friendship that had deepened over the past few months.
“I know, still I’ll get it.” She ushered Karyn toward the house.
They’d stayed at her aunt’s a little longer today to make sure the girls were settled. Karyn worried her aunt wasn’t doing as well as she let on, but didn’t know what to do about it. Every time she asked questions, her aunt became obstinate and blew off her concerns.
“Hungry?” Elfreda asked as they moved through the kitchen. Hearty aromas from the crock pot filled the air.
“Smells good. I might eat something after my shower.” She held out her hand for the bag. “You need to get dinner on the table, it’s almost eight. Cannon will be here soon.”
Elfreda hesitated and then looked at the wall clock. “I can take this to your room.”
“No.” She reached out and grabbed it. “I’m pregnant, not helpless.” She grinned at Elfreda’s frown.
“One week from seven months, large, with coordination challenges.”
Karyn pouted. “That was mean. I can still see my feet.”
Elfreda’s brow rose as she pulled out a pot from a lower cabinet.
“My toes are on my feet.” She laughed and left the room, her gait slow. At five months, she'd had a small but respectable bump. But during her sixth month she’d ballooned to the point she'd asked the doctor how many babies were inside. He’d assured her there was just one boy.
There were days, like today, that she wondered if the doctor had made a mistake. Her son was super active, stretching and kicking. Drained, she kicked off her clothes and stepped into the shower.
The day had been demanding, but she enjoyed the time she’d spent at home. Taylor had been angry when she left tonight. Lately, her younger sister had become more and more difficult, requiring more of her attention. Case in point, today she’d pushed Bella away when the smaller child had brought a book for Karyn to read.
Bella’s screams and tantrum was one for the books. Loud, long, and laughable. She was a real drama queen. Elfreda had taken Taylor out the room, leaving Karyn to deal with Bella. It had taken two readings to get a smile from the little actress.
