CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Silar felt Salvatore’s presence before he knocked on the apartment door. Whatever the drake had been about to say died on the tip of his tongue when he saw Lilianna engrossed in her reading. Silar was hauled down the stairs by the sleeve of his shirt like a disobedient child. “What do you think you’re doing?! Our history is in those pages and you’re letting some random human read them? This could be our undoing more so than Hassianna.” Salvatore’s face turned red with anger. “I’ve protected us for so long and you go behind my back-”

“What started this was you mating with Imani,” he said accusingly. “None of this would have happened if you had kept it in your pants and let the breeding cycle pass. No matter what pain we were to endure because of it.”

“It isn’t that simple.”

“No, it is. If not for your selfishness we wouldn’t be in this situation. Imani would never have gotten abducted and the Knights of Chimera would have just been a secret society obsessed with creatures of mythos. But you had to go ahead and give them evidence. Each breath you took pulled you closer to Imani and I don’t think you even tried to fight it.”

“We aren’t all heartless bastards, Silar. Some of us wanted to find love after so long of being alone. This power was supposed to be a blessing, a gift, and yet it felt like a curse. So, yes, I selfishly fell in love and brought my beautiful son into existence. And you know what? I don't regret it."

"Of course not. Because you get everything you want while the rest of us clean up this mess. Have you ever tried apologizing for what happened between you? Whatever you did before is clearly not enough, but what you’d rather let Selena take all of this on by herself."

"I made mistakes and I’m paying for them. Working with Drogain and Frost is different than leaving Selena on her own. I don’t care what you say about my past relationship with Hassianna or my bond with Imani. At least when I leave this world, I'll have someone to remember me and carry on the legacy of my species."

Silar crossed his arms and stood with his feet shoulder width apart.

"Say what you came here for or leave."

Salvatore shook his head and scuffed. "I came to tell you that Selena and Orion are feeding us information. Your mate is doing more in a few weeks than we've accomplished in a month. But instead of helping us defend the fortress, you’ve decided to hide away in this apartment. You’re a coward, Silar. And your mate-"

"Don't call her that."

"Whatever, Silar. Stay in denial all you want, but Selena knows where Hassianna is headed to perform the ritual. She's awakening the necromancer in the druid temple in the highland mountains. Be there for her or don’t it doesn’t matter. We’re gearing up for the trip."

"That's…"

"Where Vero is? Yeah. Hassianna needs him to house the soul of the necromancer because his original body is too damaged.
