Chapter 8 – Erin

Erin parked her truck in the driveway of the house, careful not to let it graze the sleek red sports car that Molly took on her weekend expeditions into Miami. She knew she should be feeling guilty as she gathered her laptop and headed into the house. There were rules against getting involved with teaching staff. She’d violated all kinds of ethical boundaries tonight. But god, she just felt so good. Her body was glowing like it did after an intense workout, but with none of the muscular aches or fatigue that went with exercise. She felt invincible, like she could run a marathon or go ten rounds in the boxing ring without even breaking a sweat. She felt powerful, and elated, and—she fought back a laugh as the word sprang to mind—sexy. She felt sexy. She’d never felt sexy in her life.

“You’re home late.”

Daniela and Molly were flopped on the couch in the common area together, a half-empty bottle of wine on the table in front of them, and Erin couldn’t help but grin as she saw they were wearing matching pajamas.

“You guys look cozy,” she said, smiling as she set her bag down on the counter. “Date night?”

“We were going to go to the Halloween thing,” Daniela said, “but My Ex-Scumbag’s gonna be there, so we’re doing this instead.”

“You’re not going to dob on us to the Dean, are you?” Molly asked as she took a swig from the neck of the wine bottle. “Underage drinking, and all?”

“Oh, yeah, of course,” Erin said, pulling her phone out of her pocket. “Let me call her right now.”

Molly laughed, that bright, musical sound that had become such a regular part of the atmosphere in the house since Erin had lived here. “Funny! That was funny! Funny on purpose, too,” she said, eyes dancing with mirth. “What’s gotten into you tonight?”

Erin hesitated. She hadn’t been in the habit of sharing much with her housemates. She liked them both, despite their gentle teasing of her. But the truth was, she felt like she was going to burst like a balloon if she didn’t talk about what had happened tonight to someone… and it was already too late to call her parents in Colorado, who were generally fast asleep an hour after sunset. So she took a deep breath… then kicked off her shoes and joined the girls on the couch.

“Holy shit,” Daniela said blankly. “Come through, slumber party Erin!” And then, almost instantly, she narrowed her eyes. “You smell like cologne.”

“Oh my God.” Molly leaned forward as though she’d been electrocuted. “Oh my God, did it happen? Erin. Erin, did you—”

“A gentlewoman never kisses and tells,” she said, in her best attempt at Molly’s light, lilting tone… and both girls uttered a banshee-like shriek in perfect unison. Erin clapped her hands to her ears, but she was laughing as Daniela took her wrist in a vice-like grip.

“Tell. Us. Everything.”

It was the easiest thing in the world to falsify the details, just a little.
