Figure 82: Comparison of Heat Transfer Equipment

Process intensification results in less product damage, smaller equipment, and/or safer operations.

Since process intensified equipment is more expensive than standard equipment, a switch to intensified equipment makes only sense, if an operational, economic or ecological benefit is expected.

In fine chemicals, micro-reactors increasingly perform heating, cooling and fast, exothermic reactions due to their highly efficient heat and mass transfer features.

Figure 83 shows a micro-reactor developed by the Lonza currently distributed by Ehrfeld. The micro-reactor consists of multiple reaction and heating / cooling plates resulting in an easily expandable capacity.
