“You shush,” I muttered, letting go of her and rubbing my hands on my thighs, willing feeling back into them as I peered around the cave.

Aepein moved, shaking her mane and wandering over to a spot towards the back wall. It took my eyes a minute to adjust to the dim light further into the cave, but when they had I realised where she had gone, what she was doing.

She was crouched beside a nest. The largest nest I had ever seen, full of sheep’s wool, straw, and leaves, but she was not concerned with any of that. She was nudging at two large, white eggs. Each speckled with spots of blue and green, and as they bumped against each other, Aepein whined.
