Briar
The carriage ride back was quiet, and Liam stayed tucked against Briarâs side with his head down. The High Mage had healed the nicks and gave them wet clothes to wipe away the blood.
It was done, and Briar was married to a man who didnât love him back or want a baby. Heâd planned on keeping Liam, but maybe he should set him free after some time once everything was finished. Perhaps if he was on his own again, heâd get his spark back. Briar had failed to mold him in every way, and what if he never loved their child?
He couldnât see Liam being violent like Ray, but people could tell when someone disliked them or didnât care. His baby didnât need that kind of parent in the future, and this morning had proved that. Liam would never learn, although some part of Briar didnât want to let him go.
At least he could do the next part. He could just imagine what lunch would be like, which he wasnât looking forward to eating. His food was probably laced with lirek, and he imagined the cook or some servant adding it.
That was another issue heâd have to deal with now. He should probably take off Liamâs collar and see if he could use his magic, but he had a feeling his slaveâs food was also laced.
âYouâre going to eat at the High Table and sit next to me,â he told Liam. âLook pleasant, smile when I speak, and donât panic whenâ¦donât let the commotion get to you, all right?â
Liam lifted his head. âYes, Masterâ¦butâ¦â
âBut what?â
âWhy would I eat next to you and not on the floor?â
âYouâre a Prince now because you married me. We wonât engage in any more public things, and a Prince doesnât eat on the floor. Didnât I explain this earlier? Imagine what people would say if I had the Father of my child naked on the floor in the Hall. You still have to do what I say.â
Liam looked like he wanted to shrivel up and disappear when they entered the Hall. The food had just been served, and the courtiers appeared glum while they ate since they had to leave soon. Carriages had been lined up in the yard while servants worked on loading up the last of their belongings.
Some recognized Liam and stared at him since he had clothes on. Fatherâs expression would have been utterly hilarious when he noticed Briarâs slave walking on his two feet and dressed in rich clothes that were a bit too big for him.
Fatherâs eyes were dilated as usual when Briar came around the High Table and pulled out a chair for Liam to sit in. âWhat do you think youâre doing?â
âItâs lunch,â said Briar. âWhat do you think Iâm doing?â
âIf you wanted him by your feet before, thatâs one thing, but nobody but us sits at the High Table unless I invite them.â
Briar sat in his chair and motioned to a servant so sheâd bring another plate and a glass of wine for Liam who was staring at his lap.
