Inner Battle

The words scarcely leave my lips when Talia’s face loses all of its color.

“What?” she bursts out. A boy over by another shelf glares at us. The librarian pokes her head around the shelf we’re standing at and puts her finger to her lips before she disappears.

“Shh.” I wave my hand for Talia to lower her voice.

“Sorry, but…” Her voice is a frantic hiss. “Are you out of your mind?”

“Nope.”

“Yes, you are. You want me to shoot you?”

“Yep.”

“You’re insane.” But I can see excitement shining in her eyes. “What if I hurt you? Or worse? And I’m pretty sure shooting you with an arrow is against school rules.”

“If I’m right, you won’t be able to hurt me at all.”

“Sam, I dunno,” she draws out shakily. “I could kill you.”

“Well, think of it as revenge for my getting ketchup on that favorite sweater of yours I borrowed last week.”

“Sam!” she squeaks, looking stricken.

I sigh. “Talia, please, just do this for me? If you’re right and I do have a power, I need to know. I need to know I have a chance of getting through this year without those girls or the Kings getting away with doing whatever the hell they want to me. Or to anyone else.”

I won’t become a Hunter. I’m not a killer, but if the encounter with the guys in the cafeteria the other day and the one with Soren in the hall earlier today has taught me anything, it’s that I need to get the upper hand, and fast.

“If anything happened to you, I couldn’t handle it,” I add now. “I’ve lost too much already.”

Her blue eyes crinkle with worry and I cringe. The sympathy in her gaze makes me squirm, wondering how much she can work out from what I said. I’m being too intense, I know.

“Please?” I put on my best puppy dog look.

She makes a frustrated sound, and her shoulders droop in apparent resignation. “You’re not playing fair, Sam.”

I grin. “Thank you, Talia.”

She grumbles and shakes her head. “I swear, if you get killed, I’m never speaking to you again.”

A snicker escapes. “Won’t happen. I’ve seen you; you’re a better shot than most of the students in Hawkstrom’s class.” Glad that my voice sounds more sure than I feel, I sling my arm around her and walk with her toward the study tables.

“If Hawkstrom finds out, we’ll both be expelled,” she hisses, putting her textbooks on the table.

“Then I guess we better not let him find out.”
