Chapter 6 – Janelle

As much as Janelle wished she could forget everything that happened with Conri, she simply couldn’t. The little life growing inside her wouldn’t let her forget, for starters. The more she tried to purge Conri from her head, the more vivaciously he invaded her thoughts.

Finally, her curiosity got the better of her and she decided that she needed to visit him. It would give her the clarity and closure she needed to put all this behind her. Or, at least, that was what she told herself. Hopping into the old car she’d purchased when she arrived in town, she set out in search of the bayou, where he’d told her he lived. After an hour of frustrating wrong turns, she finally stumbled on it. Arriving there, she was filled with a strange feeling. She almost felt a weird sort of comfort, like he was calling out to her.

Eventually, she found it more easily than she expected. There seemed to be a threat drawing her to the bayou. Well, that definitely wasn’t a prospect she wanted to focus on. She didn’t know what that meant but she really didn’t want to think she and Conri were somehow mystically linked, especially now that she knew he wasn’t exactly human. Truthfully, she felt an overwhelming sense of guilt that he’d sustained such terrible injuries protecting her. Checking on him would put her mind at rest and that would be the end of it.

She would never have to think about Conri again.

Ever.

As she pulled up, surprise hit her. The people out on the bayou looked so normal. It wasn’t a leap of logic to assume that they were wolves too but there was no hint of menace in them. For several minutes, she wandered around, hoping to catch sight of Conri, but she couldn’t see him anywhere. A hint of panic bloomed in her chest and she hoped he was okay. If he wasn’t, it would have been her fault.

An older, gray-haired man stepped into her path, almost sending her stumbling to the ground and she took several seconds to right herself.

“Who the hell are you?” he demanded furiously, sniffing the air. “What are you doing here?”

The moment she looked into his face; a hint of recognition sparked in her memory. He’d aged in the decade and a half but it was unmistakable. Standing before her, with a slightly more furrowed brow and roughened skin, was the man who’d saved her from the fire all those years ago.

This was the man-wolf who’d haunted her childhood dreams.

This was the man who’d saved her from a certain fiery death.

Remembering the night that she met Conri, she thought she recognized him from somewhere and now she knew why. This was unquestionably Conri’s father and the younger man had his father’s eyes.

“Is something wrong with you?” he asked, visibly irritated by her silence. He sniffed the air again and stilled. “You. I know you.”

“You do.”

“Goddammit! All these years, I never thought I’d see you again.”

A tear trickled from her eye before she could stop it.
