Jesus’ anger, verbalized in these lines of indignant thunder, sounds more terrifying after each repetition. The effect is cumulative. The hammering denunciations break up the false front of glib performance and expose the inner emptiness of self-centered smugness.

How many reprimands are pronounced in this passage?

Lord Jesus Christ, I accept the designation “Pharisee” and put myself under your prophetic analysis. Expose every tendency in me to separate the inner life of faith and the outer life of reputation; convict me of every instance of saying more than I am living. “Put me together, one heart and mind; then, undivided, I’ll worship in joyful fear” (Psalm 86:11). Amen.
