Zaki Gordon was blessed with almost everything—talent, wit, beauty, a fair and sunny disposition, wisdom far beyond his years, an enormous capacity to love and accept love, an ability to enjoy all that life had to offer, and the gifts that enabled him to offer something back to life. He was blessed with everything…except the gift of years. He walked this earth for twenty-two glorious summers and left a legacy that increases in size and strength with each passing year.

When he was born he was called an old soul, and I believe that to be true. I have come to believe that he simply didn’t have much left to do on this earth and so his stay was all too brief.

He had to fight to be born at all and he made it clear that he was not even a little bit happy about that. His mother was in labor for twenty hours in Hadera’s Assaf Harofeh Hospital in Israel. The umbilical cord was wrapped twice around his neck and it took forceps and suction to bring him out. His head looked like a squashed potato, one that had been stepped on and perhaps stepped on again.

When the nurse brought him out into the waiting room, however, his eyes were completely focused and his vision stereoscopic. He looked each one of us square in the eyes and then moved on to the next one down the line and stared him down as well with a look that was absolute cold fury at what he had just gone through.

The nurse, who was Moroccan, was so unnerved by Zaki’s look that she spit three times and made the sign against the evil eye. She had been a nurse for twenty years, she said, and had never seen a look like that before. Zaki was born, and he was pissed. Perhaps, recognizing that he had been born into a Jewish family in Israel, he realized that he was only a week away from being circumcised as well.
