The June breeze seemed to beckon Ayodele as she stepped off the plane in Daily, Mississippi, roughly half an hour from Daylight. The airport in Daily was so small that only one plane could arrive in a two-hour window. The plane had been so small she feared the pilot would come over the intercom and tell everyone on the left side of the plane to stick their arms out the windows and flap them to keep the plane in the air. A relief settled over her when she saw a small, round woman with glasses and a teeny-weeny afro jumping up and down with a poster that read “Ayodele Hall.” Ayodele immediately began walking toward her.

“Hi, Ms. Hall. I’m Bernetta Jamison, and I work with the Daylight Foundation. I just wanted to welcome you to Mississippi!”

Ayodele smiled and shook the woman’s hand. “I’m glad to be here.”

“I will be taking you to Daylight to get you checked into your place. Let’s grab your luggage and head on to Daylight.”

Bernetta spoke and walked so quickly, Ayodele had trouble keeping up with both. No sooner than her bag tumbled down onto the baggage claim conveyor did Bernetta grab it. Ayodele had to ask herself if she had even identified the bag to the woman. She figured she had. How she would be able to keep up with Bernetta’s energy was beyond her.

The two of them hopped into Bernetta’s compact hatchback and pulled out of the airport parking lot.

“That silver hair,” Bernetta started, “it’s a good look on you.”

“Thanks.”

“We’ll be in Daylight in about thirty minutes, so just sit back and rest yourself. Enjoy the scenery.”

Ayodele nodded, but once she had seen what felt like the one millionth tree lining the highway in the first ten minutes of the drive, she closed her eyes and yielded to the nap she had been unable to embrace on her flight.

She woke up as Bernetta pulled into downtown Daylight, and what she saw nearly made her scream when she looked through the car window.
