Bryan took his most memorable images when he came across the aftermath of a German strafing raid on September 13. In a small field close to Powązki Cemetery west of the city, a group of women had been digging for potatoes when a Luftwaffe plane raked the area with machine-gun fire, killing two of them. When he arrived, Bryan began photographing the bloody scene, but was interrupted by ten-year-old Kazimiera Mika, the younger sister of one of the dead, who seemingly couldn’t understand why her sister would not speak to her:
