Nora let her pack slide off her back onto the ground without waiting for Paul to help. The afternoon had been just as frustrating as the morning, and it was obvious that they weren’t chasing wolves but humans playing wolves. Two more trips down to the parking lot and a few hours searching fruitlessly for a trail leading into the wilderness had convinced her. She realized looking around the campsite that she’d missed other clues, had been so focused on Paul, she’d let things slip past her, and felt like a bit of a fool.

“Don’t take it so hard,” Paul said, coming up behind her and wrapping his arms around her. “They did a good job of making it look real. I bet there aren’t very many people who could have figured it out like you did.”

Even though there were alarm bells going off in her head, she leaned back against him, enjoying the feeling of his arms around her and the warmth that spread though her. “I should have figured this out sooner,” she said. “I’m sorry you wasted your time following me around.”

He turned her around in his arms. “You haven’t wasted my time, in fact, I’m grateful for the experience. It’s helped me see things a lot clearer,” he said. “And thanks to you, we won’t lose our grazing permits now. Anyone else would have just come out here and shut us down. I don’t have to tell you how devastating that would have been.”

“I just wanted to do what was right,” she said, feeling a little better. “I guess I was just hoping it was true. Maybe that’s why I didn’t see what was so obvious. We could go home now if you want. I’m sure we could call someone to pick us up. I know you’re anxious to get back to civilization.”

“We could do that, or we could spend one more night out here,” he said, surprising her. “Didn’t you say something about a surprise, and if there’s a lake around here, I wanted to try fishing again.”

“You want to stay for another night?” she asked, narrowing her eyes at him.

He shrugged. “I’m having fun, Nora,” he said. “I don’t want it to end. As long as we go back tomorrow, I don’t see what harm it will do. Maybe we could just forget about the wolves and enjoy ourselves for the night. There’s no harm in that.”

She didn’t completely trust him, especially when she looked into his eyes and saw the desire smoldering in them and her body responded, sending thrills shooting through her. “I feel like you’re up to something, Mr. Mayor,” she said, searching his face. “But I guess one more night won’t hurt anything. I do have to warn you that there won’t be any fishing. We’re stuck with the dehydrated food for tonight.”

He made a face. “I suppose I can stomach it for one more night,” he said. “But as soon as we get back, I’m taking you out for a real meal.
