Recording Your Travels

Many adventurers find it useful to keep notes about their travels. The form of these records and the amount of information they capture depend on both the situation and the character. A druid trying to find a rare creature’s lair may need precise details about the landscape, while a barbarian trying to locate a treasure stash might make do with only a rough, hasty sketch of the area.

An adventure journal can include whatever you want. An artistic character might embellish records with drawings, sculptures, poems, or even songs written about their experiences. An impatient adventurer might only make quick notes with just enough detail to spark their memory later on. Do they have a hidden side to their personality? The journal may serve as an outlet to write about concealed emotions.

Even if your character isn’t the type to keep a record of their journey, it’s a good idea to do so as a player (and definitely as a Dungeon Master!). Jotting down things that happen during the game helps keep track of the story you’re creating with your friends. Reviewing your notes before a session also helps you remember where the story left off and what your character wanted to do next. Make these notes as simple or complex as you want, so long as you find them useful.
