Chapter Twelve

My mood improved as we got further and further away from Phase Mountain. It seemed like hell had frozen over when Cato came to me and asked me to help Halle get away, but he had a good reason for trusting me. It was clear that Dr. Douglas had ambitions and that the situation was going from bad to worse. As the time passed, they became more desperate in their quest for a cure. Since I wasn’t certain what they’d be willing to do, I refused to put Halle in harm’s way.

She was too important.

She was too vulnerable.

She was…mine. To protect. To save. To heal.

Douglas was the smartest prodigy in the world, but he wasn’t any closer to finding out what was cursing our wolves—my pack, my family.

Halle’s eyes were heavy. I’d told her a few times to go to sleep, but she was too wired and stubborn to listen. She reached for the radio and started scanning the stations. “We used to go on road trips all the time,” she whispered. “Mona liked to listen to classical music on the drive.” She stopped on a station playing piano and leaned back in her seat. It wasn’t my music of choice, but maybe the lullaby would help her fall asleep.

She stared out the dark window and exhaled. “The summer after her pilgrimage, she went on tour. Mom and Dad bought an RV, and we hit the road. I was mad because I had to spend the summer in concert halls and at prodigy events. It was exhausting. Everyone I met called me Mona’s sister. I doubt a single person remembered my name.”

I wanted her to keep talking and opening up to me. The more I learned, the more I liked Halle. She was selfless and loyal. She was also strong, so incredibly strong. “I haven’t seen much of the world. I was at Alpha Camp most of my life, then moved to Phase Mountain,” I admitted. It wasn’t something I’d ever been particularly bitter about. I knew that once I became alpha, I’d have plenty of opportunities to travel. Now I’d have to go wherever Halle went.

She yawned. “Mona played in every major city,” she replied. “But I didn’t get to go sightseeing. Her practice kept her busy. Jax had strict security procedures. That was a time when several fringe groups were becoming quite active. Several death threats were made against Mona. Every friend I made had to be vetted—not that I made many friends.”

I was fuming at the thought that anyone could threaten Halle or her family. I would tear their flesh from their bones. The number of enemies we faced was overwhelming. We were fairly protected at Phase Mountain, but if the feral problem continued, there would be many people wanting to eradicate prodigies and the shifters.

“We went to New York once for Mona to perform at Carnegie Hall. It might have been Mona’s best performance. She practiced so much for that show. I still listen to
