4.1.4 Fractional Factorial Design

Full factorial designs for complex processes may be too costly and time-consuming. In addition, the precision obtained may be far beyond that required for decision-making. In a 27 factorial design, each main effect is an average of 64 combinations of other factors. It may be sufficient to conduct an 8- or 16-fold replication. Information in this partial approach is lost in particular with respect to interactions between factors, and so some caution should be exercised. A screening study may benefit from this approach as it has little impact, but a foundational study on which serious decisions would be based might require greater attention.
