At first, Cross didn’t realize what had happened. One second he was looking up at his decoy and wondering how long it would take for the sniper to take the bait. A split-second later, the binoculars exploded as a bullet punched right through them. The hat went flying and a piece of the binoculars snapped off and flew past Cross’s face, nicking his cheek.

At what seemed like the same instant, a muted cough came from Yamashita’s rifle.

CRUCK.

Less than a second later, the sickening sound of impact came back from the opposite end of the crash site.

“Clear,” Yamashita said. His voice was quiet and subdued, but he didn’t whisper.

Cross pressed a hand to his cheek. His mitten came away with a thin, short line of blood from where the bit of shrapnel had cut him. “You sure you got him?”

Yamashita gave a small shudder that only Cross was close enough to see. “I have eyes on the target now, Commander,” he said. “I got him.” He said the last three words so quietly they almost disappeared in the icy wind.

“Does he have a spotter?” Cross asked. He knew Yamashita well enough by now to know not to thank him or praise the quality of his shooting.

“No,” Yamashita replied.

“Must have been a sentry,” Cross speculated. “Probably radioed in as soon as he saw us.”

“I would have,” Yamashita agreed.

Cross frowned. “That means either reinforcements are coming, or they’re going to be holed up waiting for us when we get to Lost Aspen.”

“Either way, we don’t have much time to wait around, sir,” Yamashita said.

Cross nodded. “Gear up and get your shorts back on. Take your partner and head up the path. Scout the way and find out what you can. We’ll join you shortly.”

“Sir,” Yamashita said. He waved downhill to get Jannati’s attention and signaled the Marine to join him. They paired up and Yamashita explained Cross’s orders. Jannati nodded and got his gear together.

Cross descended the hill to address the remaining men. “Sniper’s down,” he began, “but it’s more than likely the enemy knows we’re here and figures we’re on the way. They’re either going to meet us halfway or dig in and let us come to them.”

“And they’re probably going to start executing the civilians,” Dyer said under his breath. “So there are no witnesses.”

“You’ll speak when I ask for your opinion,” Cross snapped at him.

Dyer flinched. “Sir, yessir,” he drawled. His tone was low and flippant, but he broke eye contact under the force of Cross’s unwavering glare.

“Gear up,” Cross said to his men. “We’re moving out.”
