Teaching Through Symbols

Abductees frequently report that they see or are shown strange writing in the ships, which they assume represents a symbology of some sort that they do not comprehend (Pazzaglini 1991 and 1994). Jim Sparks’s case seems unusual in this regard, for his “alien boot camp” experiences have included a rather comprehensive curriculum taught by the aliens mainly through symbols, whose meaning they gradually made clear to him. The aliens, Sparks suggests, “use symbols to establish a common ground of communication.” Before each abduction, he has noted, the aliens show him a symbol. Most often it has been an owl, projected into his visual field or consciousness like a hologram. When the owl appears, Sparks writes, it is time to “prepare for school or to learn.”

In the ships lessons have been specifically devoted to teaching him the meaning of various complex symbols. He is guided to draw them by an electriclike energy that moves his finger together with the rest of his body. “Symbols,” Sparks suggests, could be “a common ground tool for communicating a message between extraterrestrials and humans.” Through his experiences he has learned that “certain symbols have the same meaning to us as to them, only it’s a faster form of communication.”

On one occasion Jim was sitting on an easy chair in his living room in the middle of the afternoon. He was exhausted and had a headache, which he attributed to being “pulled” by the beings the night before. All at once he felt as if his body were surrounded by static electricity, and then he sensed a foul, sulfurous smell like rotten eggs. As if out of nowhere, three marble-sized phosphorescent green balls of light hovered about five feet in front of him. They formed a triangle and floated down onto the top of his coffee table. In the center of the triangle (itself an important universal symbol of eternal life), an image of an owl appeared, and he was “frozen with fear.” “School! Be prepared for school; that’s the symbol for school,” he blurted out loud. Then the owl disappeared.

Another time Jim had a strange experience, mediated by symbols, that seemed to be a kind of test of his character. It began when the beings “escorted” him from his car, through a cow pasture, and into a landed craft. Inside the craft he soon noticed a huge red ant crawling around in a circular space, which Jim estimated to be about eighteen inches in diame ter. The words experiment and kill were communicated to him telepathically, and at the same time the word kill appeared on a screen on a wall next to a symbol that represented the meaning and power of killing. Then the beings communicated to him telepathically, “Draw The Kill Symbol To Kill The Ant.” As Jim protested, air pressure seemed to build up in the room, and his heart began to “race” so intensely, he became afraid he would have a heart attack.

Although Jim knew that drawing the symbol
