DAMIEN

“Mr. Orlov is here for your appointment,” my assistant tells me over the phone. It comes out like a warning. She knows this client very well at this point, and I take her intuition to heart. Something about him is off today.

“Let him in,” I reply, but Orlov is already inside my office before I can finish the statement. He waltzes in with a big smile on his face, looking pleased with himself. He’s also very early for this scheduled browbeating. It appears the orc is gloating over his perceived win against the prosecution.

I’m about to rain all over his victory parade.

“Orlov,” I begin, gesturing towards one of the chairs that can hold an orc of his size without collapsing. He waves me away.

“No need. I’m sure this will be quick. We don’t have much more to worry about from our little annoyance, after all. What more is there to say? If you’re trying to remind me to be in court on time, you can cool it. I don’t need a mother hen pecking at my head.”

I seethe at this slight against Sophia. I need to be careful, he can’t know my personal feelings for her. But his flippant discussion of her injury makes my blood boil.

“I insist,” I state firmly. “We have some important business to discuss.” Orlov raises an eyebrow at me, his smirk dropping. After looking me up and down for a moment, he complies.

I take a moment, pondering how best to begin this conversation. I finally settle on the best words to get my message through immediately. “What the hell were you thinking?”

Orlov’s smile quickly returns as he bursts into laughter. “Oh, you mean the unfortunate accident that befell our dear Ms. Prosecutor? Come now, Damien. Don’t tell me you’re upset about it.”

I want to reach across the desk and strangle him. Make him pay for hurting Sophia, and trying to pass it off as an accident in one breath while bragging about it in the other. I want him to hurt.

But I need to be smart about it. I need to pretend this is about us, not her.

“It was sloppy,” I say. “You have too many calling cards, Nik. Too many ways the assault could be traced back to you. I’m trying to keep you out of prison, and may I add I am doing an excellent job of it. But if you keep sneaking around behind my back to do this… ‘extra credit’, it’s going to throw a wrench in my plan. I need you to keep your nose clean until this is over.”

I’m sure I worded that well, but Orlov looks suspicious. He pulls a cigar from his jacket and lights up, not bothering to ask if he can smoke in here. He takes a puff and relaxes into the chair with a long sigh.

“Is that what this is about?” Orlov asks, with a tone that says he knows it isn’t. Not really.

“Of course it is,” I lie. “You hired me because I’m the best at what I do.
