WHILE KARNIENKO and the Germans examine the footprints, one of the rebels who has been holding Laemmermann and the others at gunpoint sits hidden in a bush, watching them. It is Hamsa. He’s running for his life. His companions are dead, and he’s ready to pull the trigger of his AK-47 if the men detect him. Nobody sees him though, and the climbers continue on their way.

Hamsa’s former captives—Laemmermann, Volosovitch, and the Ukrainians—are not far in front of the Germans. They were heading back up the Ak Su valley to their base camp, but a shepherd told them that Kyrgyz soldiers had set up an outpost in the Kara Su valley. Hearing this, Laemmermann and the rest of them had cut across the hill between the two valleys to head for the soldiers. The two groups will narrowly miss running into each other.

The Skorpions on the Kara Su are surprised by the appearance of the German-Ukrainian-Uzbek group. They escort them back over the ridge to their base camp on the Ak Su. The camp is empty, but the gear of the Ukrainians and the HELP sign lay where the Germans dumped them. A radio call brings an Mi8 to the camp, and the former hostages are whisked to Kurbaka. At one end of the large helicopter’s fuselage is a stretcher. On it is a body under a sheet. It’s Turat Osmanov.
