Deputy US Marshal Fred White, shot by âCurly Billâ Brocius.
A young Virgil Earp.
Virgil Earp in later years.
Things came to a head when after one hold-up, when $9,000 was taken, Wells Fargo temporarily closed the service between Benson and Tombstone. Virgil Earp deputised his two brothers, Morgan and Wyatt, and set off after the robbers. After a chase, which was said to have covered over 100 miles, the Earps made just one arrest.
The âCowboysâ continued their reign of terror by carrying out raids into Mexico, and in one incident they attacked and murdered four Mexicans and stole $4,000. Incensed by these attacks, Governor Pesqueira of Sonora sent one of his men to Tombstone to complain about the lack of law and order, but he was murdered en route. The people of Sonora had had enough, and during one incident in the town, four of the âCowboysâ were killed in a gun battle with enraged citizens. Two weeks later Mexican soldiers killed Newman Clanton, the leader of the âCowboysâ, along with two of his henchmen when they were caught in the act of rustling cattle. Things had reached the stage where the governments of each country were getting involved, and in the United States, a law was repealed to allow the army to be used to track down and apprehend the âCowboyâ gang.
In Tombstone, Wyatt Earp accused Sheriff Behan of being in league with the âCowboysâ when he and his brothers arrested one of Behanâs deputies, Frank Stilwell, for stagecoach robbery. The open hostility between the Earps and Behan was beginning to affect the townspeopleâs concern about law and order and the lawâs ability to capture the âCowboyâ gang.
Wyatt Earp contacted Ike Clanton, who had taken over as leader of the âCowboysâ, with a suggestion that if he gave up the outlaws who had carried out the stagecoach robberies, and aided in their arrest, Wyatt and his brothers would either kill or arrest them, and give the reward money to Ike.
