Reports of the number of crew on board Huron varies between 132 and 138. Comdr. George P. Ryan took the two-year-old ship out the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay into gale-force winds and powerful seas. Built of five-eighths-inch iron and weighing 541 tons, the barkentine-rigged screw steamer set course, moving between the Gulf Stream and the infamous Outer Banks coastline. Despite the watch changing hands like clockwork, a fatal error occurred when a bend in the coastline was not taken into account. Undercover of fog with ferocious seas breaking over the vessel, she hit hard aground and listed to her port side. The wreck of USS Huron saw a catastrophic loss of life. The numbers differ depending on the source, but it is believed that anywhere between 103 and 110 people lost their lives. Pictured here is US Navy silverware from Huron.
