A Picture of Belonging

The Bible is a picture of belonging. Revelation shows us that people from all tongues, tribes, and nations will come and worship the God of justice. This picture looks a lot more like the reality of American demographics than the fever dream of Christian nationalism with its vision cast on a white ideal that was never inclusive or reflective of the God of all creation.

Today, the big heart of Jesus is beating loud in weary believers. His heart can transform families and faith communities divided by politics. This possibility of conviction and radical forgiveness is real, because the Christian life is rooted in Jesus’s liberation and in his care for the oppressed. The liberation of Jesus changes people. And it brings people back.

This transformation Jesus brings is not reactive or defensive. Jesus was pressed on all sides in his time on earth. He was executed by political forces. Yet Jesus forgave and welcomed, praying for the very people who crucified him. Instead of building a fortress to protect the few, the American evangelical church can model the humility and sacrifice of its namesake.
