"I don't understand, Marguerite."
"Margie."
"What?"
"Call me Margie, not Marguerite." Why did her name sound like the man had a bad cold every time he spoke it and when Johnny spoke it sounded like music?
Lawrence and Margie were driven to the hills to a very fancy home where they were to eat lunch and discuss something important with Lawrence's mother.
"But what are you trying to say, Mar-gie." He flinched at saying her more common name.
"Your parents fluffed it off, didn't they? When you told them we weren't suited."
"How did you know? Who told you?"
"Never mind, Lawrence, it doesn't matter. Now listen to me. You and I both know we're not suited. God has better ideas for both our lives."
His mouth hung open as she chatted on and on all the way through the lush hills.
"But I can't do it."
"Yes, you can. Your father has no one else to leave his business to. If you are not suited to take it over then tell him."
"He'll be furious. He'llâ"
"Of course, but he'll get over it because you are his son. See this is not the case for me. My family doesn't even want me. They never did. They wanted to marry me off and have some gain in it at least some social prestige, don't you see?"
Lawrence sat listening intensely having conquered his drooping jaw.
"Now Lawrence, you must decide what it is you are fully suited for and make a case for it. Talk to your father man-to-man."
"Butâ"
"No, you must do it. Else you should be stuck forever in a miserable situation."
Margie took a deep breath and sat deep into the seat. She had told him, giving him the encouragement he needed. Now she needed to pull out of him what his true aspirations were.
"Lawrence, tell me. What have you always wanted to do when you became a man?"
"You will laugh."
"I certainly will not." She thought if she could keep from laughing at her deception, she certainly could keep from laughing now.
"I wanted to be an architect. To plan and build businesses and homes."
"Splendid. Why would anyone laugh at that? What fun you would have. Surely your father would approve. You can even plan his bank expansions."
The wheels in Margie's head spun wildly.
"And banking?" Margie asked.
"I deplore it."
"Then you must fight for this. Where can you learn to be an architect?"
"They offer it many places. I checked into it once or twice. My uncle is an architect, as well."
"But you got discouraged."
"Yes, Mar-gie, my apologies, I was used to Marguerite. But I do feel encouraged now."
"Good. But you must plan this perfectly. Show him your skills and ideas. Can you work with your uncle?"
He nodded. Then the mansion came into view so Margie and Lawrence quickly made a pact to curtail the relationship. She even gave him a hint to where she was going next month. It was truly fun to have a friend of her forced relationship. And it freed them both to go with their hearts' desires.
They survived the luncheon, thanks to other interesting guests that took over Lawrence's mother.
