Abuse Damaged
Your Thinking
- 'o matter what your story is, regardless of the specific circumstances, if you have been sexually abused, your thinking has been damaged. It has either been shaped throughout childhood by lies and deceit, or it has been turned upside down by a sudden intrusion of violence. In either case, the work of discerning truth from lies is a big job. Let's listen to the voices of these survivors as they describe their distorted thinking, and then let's explore four areas affected by abuse: doublethink, dissociation, memory, and lies.
" Aly mind would ruminate on thoughts that would be against me as a person, against my u'orth, repeating old lies from my youth. A1y thoughts never rested. I u-ordd go from one nega- ti.ve, panicked thought to the next. I would draw' conclusions about others and myself based on thoughts and feelings that were not attached to anything in the present. "
"The eye.( of an abused child see everything as a blur. All truth is distorted. "
As we look now at the damage that was done to your thinking as a result of the abuse, I would like you to keep a couple things in mind. First, if the abuse occurred when you were small, remember that a child comes into this world knowing nothing and is utterly dependent on adults to teach him or her about the self, the world, God, and everything else. A child has no preexisting body of knowledge with which to compare what is taught. Second, if your abuse occurred somewhat later, remember that trauma shatters what we believed to be true about our world. Once you have been raped, no matter how old you are, you don't just walk out the door and assume you will be safe. You quit believing that if you are good and respxnsible, things will turn out all right. The ideas we all hold on to that the world is a g(xcp, safe place or that violence will never touch us-are destroyed.
