(Parents, the religious rulers were desperate to hold onto their power. They looked good to the people on the outside, but were willing to lie to get what they wanted.)

:: What did the guards at the tomb tell the chief priests? (They told them all that had taken place.)

:: What did the chief priests decide to do to keep people from believing that Jesus had risen from the dead? (They had the guards lie and say that the disciples stole the body while they were sleeping.)

:: Why didn’t the chief priests believe that Jesus rose from the dead? (We don’t know why, but they did refuse to believe, even though they heard the story from the guards. Not everyone who hears about Jesus believes. We need God to open our hearts to believe.)

Pray about It

Ask God to help the unbelievers you know to accept the truth that Jesus died on the cross for their sins and rose again from the dead.

DAY FIVE______________________

Discover It

Today is the day we look at a different Bible passage—from the book of Psalms or one of the prophets—to see what we can learn from it about Jesus or our salvation.

Read Psalm 34:19–20.

Think about It Some More

Dying on a cross was a slow and terrible way to die. As sad as it sounds, Roman soldiers would break the legs of those who were crucified to help them die faster. But when they came to Jesus, they found that he had already died, so the soldiers did not break his legs. Instead, they pierced his side with a sword. The apostle John said that the verses we read from Psalm 34 were a prophecy about Jesus, that none of his bones would be broken (John 19:36). This tells us that God was in control of every detail of Jesus’ death. Long before Jesus was even born, God knew that none of Jesus’ bones would be broken. Another verse, Psalm 16:10, talks about Jesus’ resurrection.

Talk about It

:: Why didn’t the soldiers break Jesus’ legs when he was on the cross? (Jesus had already died.)

:: Read John 19:31–37. What did the soldiers do to Jesus instead of breaking his legs? (They pierced his side.)

:: How could God know that the soldiers were not going to break Jesus’ legs long before Jesus was even born? (God knows and controls all things, and he knows all that will happen and makes it work together according to his plan.)

Pray about It

Praise God for the way he controls all things and makes them work according to his plan.
