Thirty minutes later, Sophie had finished both readings.

When Grady had opened the fridge door and pulled out the tray with the first victim’s body, Ruby had taken one look at the carved-up woman and yelled out, “Nope!” She had announced that there was no way she needed to see anything else and that Sophie was crazy going around touching dead people.

“I’m heading to Abernethy Street. Text me when you’re done here. And make sure you wash your hands.” With a final shudder, Ruby had headed out, muttering darkly under her breath.

The first body was a woman in her mid-sixties. According to Grady, he found a match in the FBI database listing her as a missing woman from Seattle. He said it was a lucky break because she had been homeless, and often displaced people aren’t reported as missing. Her murder had been very similar to the other sacrifice. The only difference was that it was performed by one of the other Ruith brothers, not Morvan.

The second victim was a man in his twenties. Based on the track marks on his arms, Grady theorized that he was another homeless person suffering from addiction. He believed the Ruith brothers were grabbing humans that people wouldn’t notice were missing.

“A move pulled right from the serial killer handbook,” Reggie muttered darkly.

Second verse same as the first, performed by yet another Ruith brother. Mac suggested that they each took turns performing the rituals in order to get equal power. He said that the brothers aren’t talking yet, but the Conclave has people who can force them to answer all their questions.

A few minutes after Grady put away the body, they could hear Carson’s voice from the lobby. Sophie gave Mac a sideways glance because he sounded highly pissed off. His voice continued to gain in volume until Sophie could make out the words.

“You people put me in charge of this town, and now you want to get in the way of me doing my job?”

“Sheriff, there is no reason to get angry. You must understand that anything to do with druids needs to be handled delicately,” another man’s voice responded in a honeyed tone that set Sophie’s teeth on edge. She could only imagine how well that went over with Carson and his zero-bullshit tolerance. “It’s already been decided by the Conclave, Carson. It’s out of both our hands.”

Lydia popped her head in the door with an apologetic expression. “Sorry to bother you, Dr. Musteli. There’s a man here to see you. I told him that you’re in the middle of work, but he insists that he needs to talk to you right now. He says the Conclave sent him.”

“No worries, Lydia. Please send him in.”

Carson entered the autopsy room, followed closely by a man Sophie had previously seen in the company of Marcella. He was either a member of the Conclave or one of its representatives.

“Ruby, how lovely to see you again,” the man said when he spotted Sophie.

“I’m not Ruby. I’m the other sister, Sophie.
