Chapter 23

Later that evening when tempers had cooled off a bit, Liz dressed in a simple, electric blue silk, off the shoulder Ramy Brook top that set off her cobalt blue eyes and hair, and Cary had redeemed himself with a classic white button down, jeans, and Gucci loafers. Tensions were still a bit strained as they Ubered to Casa Tua, but as they sat in the romantic outdoor garden and the overhead lights twinkled, they held hands and their issues seemed to dissolve as they sipped glasses of rose from their bottle of Whispering Angel. Cary carefully avoided the subject of their afternoon visitor, even when G walked over with his best friend Sant and then sent over a magnum of rose. He sat at a nearby table attracting a great deal of attention and more than a few diners walking over and asking for selfies with him. He seemed happy to accommodate his fans and gracious at that and the waiter indicated that G Alvarez had sent them a large magnum Liz waved and mouthed “Thank you. You shouldn't have.” She acquiesced. “That was sweet of him, I guess.”

Cary waved quickly, nodded, and looked down at the menu and knew better than to address the subject. He just reinforced that the villa was remarkable and was glad she was enjoying living there and asked a few questions about the cost of the ongoing renovation. The waiter first brought a beautiful amuse bouche of chilled leek soup and then shared a delicious fettuccine with black truffles and parmesan appetizer. The two basked in the romantic ambiance; spending the first part of the evening talking about the tragedy of Covid and Cary’s overwhelming responsibilities. Liz patted his hand and had tears in her eyes as he described the elderly patients and those with underlying conditions who had passed under his watch. It made everything else seem trivial.

Cary switched the gloomy subject back to the villa, and Liz filled him in on many of the new responsibilities of being a homeowner on the water. He listened diligently without looking at his phone texts as he usually did, happy the afternoon tiff was behind them. After dinner and eschewing dessert, Cary ordered his espresso macchiato and promptly paid the bill.

Liz avoided G’s table as they walked out of the restaurant hand-in-hand but felt his eyes on her back—or at least she felt that she did. They exited the restaurant and turned left to walk to Collins Avenue, taking in the array of deco hotels and visiting, young crowds most who were not wearing masks and seemingly oblivious to the pandemic. He stopped in front of the Raleigh Hotel, now under construction to kiss her and in that moment, she was appreciative for his solid frame and soft, confident lips. It had been a while, but later that evening they made love in her bedroom, and she was happy to have him back in her arms. While there weren’t fireworks, it was pleasant, and she felt safe and secure with him sharing her bed.
