Increased landing weights prompted the installation of a third skid for the first and third X-15s in 1966–67. Operated by hydraulic cylinders, it extended below the ventral stabilizer. Frictional heat was absorbed by the desert floor rather than the skids. Smoke pots were ignited along the edge of the runway to make it more visible on approach and show wind direction. A second set had to be lit 30 seconds before the aircraft landed – a challenging task for the smoke-pot lighters who could see the black “predator” approaching at 200mph. (NASA Dryden)
