PART 2
A NEW WAY TO PRAY
CHAPTER 6
“Why?”
He asked the LORD, “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant?”
NUMBERS 11:11
For the majority of life, I avoided the most basic human question: “Why?” I often asked God to help me, and sometimes even to deliver me from my circumstances, but I didn’t know I was allowed to ask why. I thought it was not godly to question God—and maybe it was even sinful. So I avoided it at all costs.
And yet, even while I was afraid to voice them, the questions did not go away: Why do people inflict devastation on others? Why does God let bad things happen to good people? “Why?” is a howl of the soul that every one of us has cried. We ask why because we are desperate to understand. Even Jesus, who knows all things, cried “why?” on the cross. This basic human question was one of our Savior’s last words before he died.
The age-old question of human suffering can never be explained to our satisfaction. Life is not fair, and it does not always make sense. But just because the question is not always answered in a way that gives us peace, the question is still allowed.
Children love to ask questions. They want to know why you do this or that, why they can’t fly, why they have to put their shoes on, why Daddy shaves his face every day. This constant stream of questions can be exhausting to keep up with, but a good parent does not shut down a line of questioning. A good parent knows the questioning can be a relationship-building tool. God permits us to ask questions in our laments for the same reason. Even if the answers cannot be explained in this life, He still loves to draw near to us in conversation. He loves that we bring our questions to Him.
Even the hardest ones.
