Chapter Four

In the morning—or maybe afternoon—there was no telling the time in a cave, Nixie stumbled out of the bedroom she’d once shared with Blade. In the hall, she discovered a closet she hadn’t noticed last night. Nixie opened it and stared inside. Her mouth dropped open, and she stared at the contents. Rows of shelves with neatly folded clothes sat waiting. She seized a pair of pants and held them up to her hips. They were a perfect size. Rummaging through the shelves, she discovered clothes from a century ago…fifty years ago…a decade ago…and they were all in her size.

He must buy me clothes, hoping that I’ll return to him this year or the next one. That’s why he had clothes for me on the night I slept on the sofa.

Jewelry boxes held rings, brooches, necklaces, and earrings, all in her size. Photographs, tintypes, and paintings through the years sat neatly stacked on a separated shelf.

They all looked like her.

He’s been watching after me all these years.

As her eyes filled with tears, she pressed her fist to her mouth to keep from sobbing. I’m such an idiot. Well, the sooner I can kill Brett, the quicker I can make amends to him.

Climbing the stairs, she rehearsed her cover story. I’ll tell Blade I don’t remember much. Or, I didn’t catch a clue in the night. No—he’d be suspicious because he’s far too intuitive. I have to own up to knowing something but not quite sure what.

When she got to the top of the stairs, however, her heart exploded at the sight of Blade. All the love she’d once held for him rushed to the surface like a pounding wave. Oh, this is going to be brutal.

He sat on his sofa, coffee in hand, staring off in the distance. His head turned toward her as she stepped into the front room. “Sleep well?” he said, his walls clearly in place.

“I’m not sure,” she said, crossing to sit next to him. “I had some creepy dreams.”

“About?” His eyebrows arched in hope.

“Fragments, really. Not sure what they all meant. But, don’t you worry. We’ll get to the bottom of things.” She patted his thigh.

He picked up her hand and moved it back to her own lap. “Sure, we will.” He brought the coffee cup to his beautiful lips—the lips she’d once devoured.

“I think I’m going to head into work today.”

Blade’s hand stopped, cup poised near his mouth. “Do you think that’s wise?” He leaned forward and placed the ceramic mug on the table.

“I may as well get it over with. If Brett shows up—which he might not do—I’ll pretend to be traumatized or something by what I saw and can’t make heads nor tails out of it.”

Blade’s chest rose and fell in a sharp sigh. “I don’t think it’s a good idea to be around him. He’ll be suspicious.”

“Well, he knows I don’t remember much, right? My memory is clearly faulty, or I’d remember why I cursed you in the first place.” She waved her hand in the air in mock annoyance.
