Chapter 13

Devin stood in the shower early the next morning cursing himself. He could not believe he had slept with Rachel. On the decking of the flight deck. He shook his head and leaned, face first, against the bulkhead as the water ran down his back and head to stream off his face. She had been more than willing, but he could not have picked a worse place or time. At least they made it back to their respective cabins without being seen. It was one entanglement he did not want to have to explain to the rest of the team.

He turned the water off but didn’t get out right away. The cool air pebbled his skin. He needed to be sure this was the only time. Eli had been right on one score. Rachel distracted him. It would be worse than ever now, knowing how good it felt to have her in his arms, even if it could never happen again.

Devin had his battle suit half on when an alert chimed for the door. He tapped on the panel to open it as he made sure the suit was secure around his waist and picked up his undershirt. Rachel stood on the other side of the door. Devin froze.

“Can I come in? I’d rather not have this conversation in the passageway and I’m guessing you don’t either.”

“Yes. Please. I’m sorry.”

Rachel laughed as the door slid shut behind her. “It’s okay. The question is are you okay? You seem more nervous than you did after the first time we had sex.”

Devin stared at the floor, fidgeting with the shirt in his hands.

“Are you feeling bad over having sex with me? It’s not like I didn’t want it. As I recall, I was just as much of an active participant as you were.”

“Rachel—”

“It’s okay, Devin. I have no regrets. I told you I never stopped loving you, even when we agreed it was best to break up. What happened last night does not need to change anything unless you want it to.”

Devin turned his back to her, grateful his blush did not show much. Rachel laughed again.

“I’m embarrassing you, aren’t I?”

“Rachel. I.”

“I know. I remember. That’s why I tease you, though. You shouldn’t live without having people around who can tease you some for fun like this.”

Devin did not answer. It had been so long since anyone was willing to tease him like Rachel did. He jumped when Rachel’s fingers traced a scar on his back.

“Sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. What happened? I don’t remember all of these scars.”

“Hazards of being a Black Ops specialist.”

“Blaster. Knife. Whip. Burn,” Rachel said as she touched each scar.

Devin closed his eyes. With each one, images appeared in his mind. Chains holding him in place. Firefights. Blood and death. In each memory, Devin was alone. Alone in the pain and alone in making his way back to a base. The memories vanished as Rachel’s arms wrapped around his waist and she rested her head against his back.
