CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The three women spent the rest of the afternoon together, going through each room in the house. Martine was very knowledgeable about the areas that had not yet been restored. She was also a wealth of knowledge about the restoration and vintage of everything in the rooms that had been finished. Philomena asked detailed questions, indicating to Crystal that she really knew quite a bit about interior design and antiques.

Crystal felt as if she was just along for the ride a few times, but she didn’t mind. She had only been through some of these rooms once, and it was such a beautiful place she didn’t mind seeing it again and learning even more about it.

Occasionally, they would come across some men installing what looked like tiny little cameras and microphones, though Crystal certainly wasn’t any sort of expert. Mysterious little boxes were put on many of the windows in hidden locations, and Crystal assumed it was some sort of security system being installed.

Most of the places she had worked had had very obvious security systems. By contrast, the technology that was going in here seemed very unobtrusive. She was surprised that there hadn’t been something here before, but they were remedying that now. A few times, when she looked out the window, she saw men out on the grounds installing things out there as well. Quite a few of the people were new. Several faces belonged to people she had not met before.

When Crystal mentioned this to Martine, the other woman told her that they had acquired some specialist help overnight. The new guys, Martine explained, were ex-military shifters from a group out of Wyoming. They had arrived that morning at Brandt and Marco’s combined request to help beef up security. She concluded her explanation by saying that Crystal would probably meet most of them at dinner later.

After the house tour, Philomena left them back at the office. She had explained that she was going to beef up the wards on the house before dinner and went off on her own. Crystal saw Martine nod to one of the young men who appeared to be loitering in the hall, and he went after Philomena.

“Don’t you trust her?” Crystal asked as they walked back into their shared office.

Martine tilted her head in that very canine way she sometimes had. “I don’t know her. Not yet. I’d like to see how she and Marco interact before I make any decisions about her. My first instinct is to like her a great deal. She’s clearly a woman of power, and she knows how to use it. I didn’t really realize that Marco was still in touch with his relatives.”

“Yes, he told me many of them work for him in one capacity or another. I think he really misses his sisters,” Crystal said, thinking only of the hint of loneliness she had heard in Marco’s voice when he’d told her about his sisters.

“He spoke of his family with you?” Martine was looking at her oddly, and Crystal realized she’d probably spoken out of turn.
