Chapter 20

A couple of years ago, after I started making decent money at Beauquet, I celebrated my success with a tropical vacation and dared myself to step out of my comfort zone. There were plenty of high-adrenaline activities on the island, and all of them made me sick with nerves. On my last day, before I went back to Felicia and told her I’d chickened out, I paid to be lowered into the ocean in a shark cage.

Here in the Sanctum, Sebastien’s pale face brought back memories of those beasts swarming around me, sharp-toothed and driven wild from the bait in the water. I couldn’t look at him, either.

My eyes landed on two vampires feeding on one human. One was suckling at the man’s throat, and the other was feeding from his wrist. Drops of blood spilled out from between his lips and dripped onto the floor. My cock stirred, despite the haze of terror.

What was wrong with me?

“Do people get hurt here?” My voice cracked so much it didn’t even reach a whisper.

“That depends what you mean by hurt,” said Tanith.

I was getting more nervous every second. I didn’t think Sebastien would bring me somewhere too dangerous, but why were we here?

“Aiden, take a look around,” said Tanith. “Ask any questions you want. I need to talk to Sebastien.”

“Will you be okay on your own?” Sebastien asked me.

He’d been glaring seconds ago, but now there was nothing but tenderness in his eyes. Concern.

“Uh…” I stared at Tanith helplessly. She terrified me, but I trusted her honesty. “Will I be okay?”

“Of course,” she said smoothly. “Any vampire who breaks my rules is banned immediately. I have a one-strike policy here at the Sanctum.”

“What are your rules?”

Tanith counted with her fingers. Black polish glimmered on her talons. “The first rule is that my customers can’t take too much blood. If a human passes out, the vampire must stop immediately.”

“Do people pass out here often?” It wouldn’t have surprised me. I hadn’t lost any blood today, but this place made me nauseous.

“We try our best to make sure everyone stays conscious, but accidents happen. I can assure you that no-one has ever died on my watch.”

“You’re magnificent, Tanith,” said Sebastien. He smiled at her fondly.

Jealousy spiked me in the gut. I didn’t know if Sebastien liked women the way he was interested in me, but he and Tanith shared something we could never have.

“What are the other rules?”

“No sex in the main rooms, but we have bedrooms if our guests want to indulge. And of course, no-one donates blood more than one night in a row.”

“Why’s that?” I asked.

“That’s not your business,” Sebastien said. “Tanith, we need to talk.”

“Yes, we do. Chester is waiting in my office.”

“Good. I hoped I would find him here.”

Before Sebastien left the room with Tanith, he turned on me. His eyes were tired and sad. He stroked my face, and I turned to kiss his cold palm. He pulled away before my lips met his skin.

“You should talk to some of the other humans while I’m gone,” he said.
