This was a prototype 4in/50 anti-aircraft gun. Initial drawings were dated January and February 1914. The gun was ordered in 1915 but probably not completed until after the war. The gun card for this weapon is numbered 365-A, but it is clearly out of sequence. This was a built-up gun consisting of a tube, jacket, chase hoop and locking ring, all of nickel steel. It differed from all other 4in guns in having a vertically sliding breech block; it was intended to fire fixed ammunition (AA and shrapnel).
