HARGOZ

“Stop the spell!” Mrs. Murphy screams, her voice cracking. “You have to stop the spell!”

These are the dangers of living in a small town of monsters. When I worked in the city, I did not face such things as a gnome going wild in the parking lot. But I will take it in exchange for the businessman in suits, who were just as tiresome.

But her husband either doesn’t hear her or doesn’t care. His face is contorted with rage and I’m actually a little scared of him. I never would have guessed that grumpy old Mr. Murphy possessed this kind of anger.

“Daddy, make it stop!” Nar cries, tears streaming down his face. “Make it stop!”

I look around and catch Lacey’s eye. She looks at Mr. Murphy, and then back at me, and I know that she’s determined to calm him down. “Nar, it’s okay,” I tell my son, trying to keep my voice as calm as possible.

“Glasha’s over near the café,” I continue, glad that she’s close to a safe space. I need to get both of my children out of the pandemonium erupting around us. “I want you to run to her as fast as you can,” I tell him. “Pretend that you’re running the biggest, most important scorpion race ever. And when you reach her, both of you go into the café. Okay? Can you do that?”

Nar sniffles but nods. “I can do it.”

“Good boy. I know you can be brave and fast. Run!” I yell and he takes off, streaking towards his sister. As soon as I see him reach her I look back at Mr. Murphy. Lacey’s already approaching him, her hands outstretched and her face calm.

I don’t know how she can keep her composure, but I try to match her easy going approach. “Hey, Mr. Murphy,” I say as casually as I can, keeping my own hands out. “This is a pretty cool spell you’ve cast, but maybe it’s time to let things go back to normal.”

“Yes,” Lacey nods. “We all know what you can do, and it’s really impressive. I have to admit, I didn’t know you had it in you.”

“I’m always getting underestimated,” he growls. “No one ever takes gnomes seriously. People make us into garden statues, for pity’s sake!”

“Which is a shame,” Lacey nods. “You’re so much more than that. So much wiser and more powerful.”

“You’re damn right,” he says, his voice full of pride.

“I don’t think anyone in Curiosity will ever underestimate you again,” I tell him. “I know I certainly won’t.”

“But you don’t want everyone to be afraid of you, do you?” Lacey asks. “Think of how much that would upset your wife.”

“She’s too concerned with what others think,” he snaps.

“That might be true,” Lacey concedes. “But I know you love her and want her to be happy.”

“What do you know about it?” Mr. Murphy says.

“It’s obvious,” I chime in hastily. “The kind of relationship you two have, that’s what I used to think my wife and I would have.” I swallow, surprised that a lump has formed in my throat.
