ELEVEN

AUDREY

Audrey’s heart rate picked up. It thrummed with the thunder. The adrenaline burst through her just as a lightning bolt cracked overhead.

Everything came into pure focus. The raindrops became clearer, and the dark clouds were more defined. The path to safety was pronounced. They weren’t in any immediate danger as long as they steered clear of where the darkest clouds and greenest sky were.

Audrey’s eyes widened. Green sky. She searched the skies overhead for the supercell.

“What are you looking for?” he asked, leaning forward and aiming his eyes upward.

“A wall cloud.”

“What’s that?”

“It’s a cloud lower than the rest that develops beneath the base of a cumulonimbus cloud. If there was a tornado, that’s where it would originate.”

He probably didn’t understand half of what she said, but that was all right. If he was going to hang out with her, he needed to learn the jargon.

“Bingo.” Audrey pulled to the side of the road. She reached into the back and pulled out a camera.

The supercell was separated from the others. It crept eerily through the sky like a stretched building under the pressure of tense muscles. Audrey swallowed. The sky was a conglomerate of colors … whites, grays, blues, and always beautiful.

This supercell was no different.

Its long white edges were frayed at the end. The top was pure, ghost white. The graduation of color was a tribute to where the sun was versus shadows. The underside of the cloud was almost black as the ground cast no light. The texture was tight, angry black swirls spooling down toward Audrey and Stone.

Raw, sea-glass green hues crept around the edges of the white, gray, and black supercell, giving it a malicious feel.

Audrey studied the direction the supercell churned. She was glad to have parked where she had. She leaned over Stone and began snapping images. “Wow, this is stellar,” she whispered.

She didn’t worry about reviewing the images on her camera’s screen. She didn’t want to miss a thing.

Stone sighed. “Would you like to climb in my lap?” He pushed the seat all the way back. Audrey didn’t take her eyes from the viewfinder, but she set her lips into a soft smile. “If I did that,” she snapped the camera, “you might get an erection. And as much as fucking in the rain is fun, doing it in a tornado is not the wisest choice.”

“Number one, just because I get an erection doesn’t mean I have to have sex. Number two, you’re crazy if you think I’d be able to concentrate on anything other than the impending tornado looming over us right now.”

Audrey broke away from her camera to give Stone a sly look. “Want me to try?”

“No. I guess that means you are crazy.” Another sigh slipped from Stone’s mouth. “I think we need to go. The look in your eyes about this storm makes my skin itch.”

Audrey slid back into the driver’s seat. She put the camera behind her and continued to watch the sky. “That’s just nervousness from being in your first storm.
