The Lady Doth Protest Too Much

Meena didn’t want to take things so far. At first, she only wanted answers. Struggling with her identity, a young witch living in the Otherworld, she needed to understand why. But the knowledge came at a terrible price. The more she learned about life and her world, the less content she became.

Zim tried to stop her from spiraling down the rabbit hole, but he could do nothing because she wasn’t in control. The ugly emotions of envy, hate, and resentfulness overtook her heart. Even now, she couldn’t say with certainty what triggered the madness in her. Yet, destroying the very fabric of reality became her only goal in life.

“Do you want this?”

The question made her look at Rayan. He lounged in front of the TV, and when she didn’t reply instantly, he asked again, “Do you want to watch this?” He gestured toward the channel that was on.

“I’m not watching,” she said. “You can watch whatever you want.”

Her mind wasn’t on the TV or even Rayan. She knew how much he hated her, and yet, he pretended otherwise because he feared she would kill him. If Zim could see them now, he would laugh and tell her what an idiot she was living with. After almost a year, if he still didn’t understand her well enough to know she would never harm him, he probably would never understand her.

Not that anyone would blame the guy. He had witnessed her murder people. And in his human mind, it didn’t matter that those people were criminals and didn’t deserve to live. Rayan might be half-Grim Reaper, but his thoughts and feelings were all human. Another thing no one could blame him for. He was raised by his human mother and lived his life in the dark. To Meena, knowledge was everything. She wouldn’t trade her memories even for an eternity of peace.

Sometimes she wondered why she hated her Grim Reaper father more than her witch mother. Just because one was dead and the other still lived shouldn’t make a difference. Because, in their ways, they both left her.

The only person who never left her was Zim, but she left him. And in the end, it turned out that no one would ever stay.

“What are you thinking about?” Rayan asked in a rare moment of friendliness.

They might be roommates, but that was out of necessity and nothing more. Given the choice, he would leave her in a blink of an eye. She wouldn’t give him that choice.

“Nothing, much. Just life and,” she shrugged, “you know.”

He stared at her for a long time and said, “I don’t understand you, Meena.”

The statement made her laugh. And once she started, she couldn’t stop. Tears of laughter rolled down her cheeks, and she doubled over. Once it died down, she looked at him. He was watching her with concern, and that embarrassed her. Apart from Zim, no one had ever shown concern for her.

Her voice clogged, and she said, “You don’t need to know me.
