Chapter Five
Iâve been wandering around the mansion the last several hours; Ryan had something come up that couldnât wait apparently. I had sat around in my room until I was climbing up the walls with boredom. Iâve explored just about every room that wasnât locked, waiting on him to get back. My stomach grumbles as I cross the entry hall headed toward the kitchen. Guess Iâll have to find something myself. Damn, Iâve gotten spoiled already with the amazing meals he cooks.
I start rifling through the fridge, looking for something easy, when I hear steps entering the kitchen. I poke my head around the fridge door and see Koa entering with arms full of take-out bags. âYou feeding an army?â I ask, shutting the door.
He arches an eyebrow at me, setting the bags on the massive granite kitchen island. âHave you seen the way you eat?â
I feign offense, âMe? Eat like a grown man? Never!â I say, putting my hand to my chest in a show of hurt.
He laughs at me while unpacking all the food from the bags, âYou eat more than I did playing college ball. And that is really saying something.â
I look up and down at him, gesturing to his size, âIâm assuming football?â I climb up on the bar stool, propping my elbow on the counter and my chin on my elbow. âWhat college?â
âI was a Kentucky Wildcat.â he says, looking at all the food in front of him. Looks like he picked up food from about five different restaurants. âI didnât know what you wanted, so I got a little bit of everything. Ryan is going to be held up for a while, so he left me in charge of feeding you.â
I arch an eyebrow at him, my back going straight, âWell, donât feel obligated to take time out of your day for me. I can feed myself.â
He rolls his eyes and lets out an exasperated breath, âKeira, you know what the hell I meant; Iâm not around humans all the time like Ryan. Donât start your shit with me, we both know youâre not actually offended.â he deadpans.
I laugh, âWell, shit, that didnât work.â He shakes his head at me while I start picking through the food, settling on some fried rice and a massive grilled chicken salad and some rolls from my favorite Italian restaurant just down the road from my apartment.
He grabs some type of pasta and a couple bottles of water and sits down beside me at the counter, handing me one. We eat for a while without saying anything, then I turn to ask him something thatâs been bothering me, âSo what was so important Ryan had to leave? He said it was something that couldnât wait? When he told me he was leaving, he seemed pissed.â
I shove a bite of rice into my mouth as Koa answers, âThatâs something I canât tell you, Keira. And he was only pissed because he wasnât going to be able to be here up your ass.
