CHAPTER FIVE

Chris and Ben stayed up late talking. Ben shared with him the bad news regarding his job. He was a tech supervisor for a small company in Philadelphia. He’d worked for the company since graduating from university. The Crimson Corporation took over the small company one week ago and immediately shut it down. Everyone, all eighty employees, were laid off.

That action left Ben with a huge resentment for anything Crimson related, including Chris’s new boyfriend Kegan. Chris tried to reassure Ben of his abilities and that another opportunity would come along soon, but Ben preferred to stay in his funk. They didn’t turn in for the night until well after two in the morning.

Sleep came slowly for Chris his mind was consumed with images of a naked Kegan George. If things had gone the way, he’d hoped he would be in bed with Kegan right now and would be enjoying all that muscle he’d felt beneath his clothes. He fell asleep with that thought in his head and had some wonderfully sensual dreams until a force that was subtle, but prevailing gradually took over the night.

His sexy dream gradually took a strange turn and twisted up into something otherworldly. He saw dragons and vampires existing as humans in common society. He saw below the surface of the City of Crimson to a reality that wasn’t real, couldn’t be real. There were faces he recognized that took on other forms and characteristics, morphing into . . . monsters. He tossed and threw back his covers trying to pull himself out of the strange slumber that was taking him down the rabbit hole.

Suddenly it all slowed down, the rapid images and the disturbing scenes faded, and calm overcame his fears. Chris watched as the dragons flew and one came to rest beside him. It was large but not humongous. And although it looked fierce, Chris was not afraid; his instinct told him there was no danger. The dragon stayed there for a moment and then flew away.

A group of people came towards him some rigidly controlling their appearance and others in obvious distress. They were communicating with him, but they weren’t speaking. They stood there for a few minutes and then disappeared.

Then a figure of a man came forward out of the haze and took Chris in his arms while whispering softly to him. Chris was relieved that it was Kegan and relaxed into his arms. When Chris looked up into the handsome face of his soon to be lover, he saw something different.

Kegan’s eyes were red, and his teeth looked like fangs and shown below his upper lip. He looked hungry but not in a way that caused Chris concern. Kegan looked hot as hell, and Chris felt his blood pressure rise as an all-consuming craving took him over. Chris, instinctively bent his head to the side exposing the tender white flesh of his throat and begged for consummation.

Chris woke just as teeth began to pierce his skin. He sat up with a start and looked around the room.
