Chapter 21

“Now that I’ve got you all alone,” Chase said, taking Margie’s hand in his.

“We’ve pretty much been alone together for days,” she laughed.

“Not alone like this,” he stated, looking up at the darkening sky. “Look at that huge yellow moon climbing over there.” He pointed to the east. “And look at all the stars popping out.” He swept his hand toward the Heavens. “You can’t see a light show like this in the city.”

Margie looked toward the sky. “You’re right about that. This reminds me of when we used to sit on my front steps long after dark because we didn’t want to leave each other.”

“That’s exactly what I was thinking of. I don’t ever want to lose you again, Margie. The years I couldn’t find you were the worst years of my life.”

“Don’t say that.” She turned to look at him. “Look what you’ve done with your life. You got a job, worked hard, and it paid off. I’m so proud of you. I know you inherited, but you deserved it. Your hard work earned it.”

“It would’ve been sweeter if you’d been here. Me and Pete were two peas in a pod. We leaned on each other and depended on each other.”

“What are you talking about?” she asked.

“Me and Pete were a lot alike. He’d lost Betsy and I’d lost you. Just in different ways.”

“Chase, I—”

They both looked up to see an old, beat up car barreling down the ranch road towards the house with it’s brights on. The driver was driving erratically and beating on the horn. Chase mumbled under his breath as he stood and Margie followed.

“Who is it?” she asked, touching his shoulder with her hand.

“Dammit, it’s Wynona.” He shook his head in disgust.

The car came to an abrupt halt on the green grass just a few feet from the porch. The big busted blonde emerged from the driver’s seat.

“Chase! Chase, you’re home!” She hurried towards him with her arms outstretched.

“I’m going to bed, Chase. I’ll see you in the morning,” Margie said, moving past him.

He caught her upper arm in a tight grip. “Don’t go, Margie. I’ll get rid of her.”

“Don’t change your life because I’m here. I’m just a temporary guest.” She pulled out of his grasp and went into the house.

Inside, she heard Wynona reach Chase on the porch. “Chase, darling. I missed you so much. You were gone so long.”

Margie was sure the other woman was in his arms by now. She moved quickly down the hall to her room with tears threatening to spill forth, before she could hear anymore.

“What are you doing here?” Chase asked Wynona. “You weren’t invited either time today,” he said gruffly.

“But, Chase, I know how you feel about me. I had to see you,” the fake blonde pouted.

Chase’s head shot to the side as he heard a door slam inside the house. “Dammit to hell,” he muttered.

“What’s wrong, honey?” Wynona cooed.

“I’ve told you before, I’m not interested. I don’t want you. And don’t call me that.
