When you think of your audience, think of what your audience is drawn towards and where your art fits within their life(styles). Go on Instagram, look through forums, and learn about people and what they like, admire, and are genuinely excited about. Listen up when they mention what magazines they read or what podcasts they listen to and position your work within that field. Make it easy for people to recommend your work by adding value to their lives.
I, personally, love to follow creatives who share bits and pieces of their work process because it keeps me motivated to pursue the work I do. I love following people who share their techniques and are open about how they approach their everyday challenges because it helps me solve mine. And I love to follow people who go places I would like to experience for myself because it keeps me hungry for what else there is to explore in the world.
You too might have preferences and are probably able to explain why you prefer to follow some people more than you enjoy following others.
You might recognize there’s a difference between keeping up on people’s lives who we know and who we don’t know. When we see personal photos of people we know, it warms our hearts to see their happiness, their babies, and their personal achievements. If, on the other hand, we follow the paths of people we don’t know in person, it’s hard to be as genuinely excited about their personal successes unless it helps us identify what it takes to achieve the goals we’ve set for ourselves.
If you pick your five favorite social media accounts of people you follow and jot down why that’s the case, it’ll determine how you could add value to others with what you share on your social media accounts. The feelings you have are probably the feelings people have when they follow you.
If you can identify why you enjoy seeing the successes of people you don’t know, it’ll be easier to determine what it is you should share online that’s inviting others to follow along.
Share your process, create for your audience, and most importantly, as your audience grows and evolves, do the same alongside them. You can learn a lot about accommodating to your audience from Shayna. She founded a business that supports her nomadic lifestyle by listening to her students’ feedback and continuously sharing what she has created for the people she decided to serve. There’s plenty to take away from her story, so I hope you have a pen or highlighter in your hand!
