Hank was dusting the bottles on the shelves when the door of the store opened. Benson entered in a good nature.
“Hey, Hank. How’s it goin, buddy?”
Hank looked at Benson and at once, he knew he was intoxicated. “ You want another one?” Hank asked, going and taking a quart of Henny from a shelf.
Benson took out his wallet and was paying for his purchase when he noticed Hank’s grim attitude. “What’s up with the sad face?” Benson asked.
“You’re going overboard Ben.”
“I’m a retired man. Shouldn’t I enjoy my freedom?”
“You’re not free. You’re locked into that damn bottle.” Hank said, pointing to the liquor.
“Believe me. I’ve got control over everything I do.” Benson stated, with a hint of anger.
Hank raised his hands in submission. “As a friend, I figured I would pull your coat.” Hank said as began ringing up the purchase.
After leaving the store Benson jumped in his car and peeled away. Hank watched him speed away from the window.
Benson parked his car in front of the garage, when he entered the house Sandra was cleaning the living room.
“Hey, baby.”
Sandra looked at her father and smiled. “Hey, daddy.”
“When is your show again?” Benson asked, as he took a seat on the sofa.
“Saturday night.” Sandra said with pride.
“I will definitely be there.” Benson promised.
As Sandra wiped down the coffee table the smell of alcohol penetrated the air. “Daddy, have you been drinking again?”
Benson looked away. “Yeah, I had a drink or two.”
Sandra dropped the dust rag on the table and sat on the sofa next to her father. “Daddy, you’re over doing it. I think you need to get some help.” Sandra implied.
“I don’t need no damn help!” Benson replied angrily. “I worked for years to get what we have, don’t you think I should enjoy it?”
“You’re just using that as an excuse.”
“I’m a grown ass man. What do I need an excuse for?”
“Daddy, mommy is gone! No matter how much you drink, she’s never coming back!”
“Don’t you talk that way about your damn mother!”
Benson stated harshly.
Sandra remained calm a spoke in a soft tone. “Daddy you’ve got to let go and move on with your life.”
“What’s wrong with my life?” Benson asked getting up from the sofa. “Look at this beautiful house.” He said. “Look at that beautiful car.” He said pointing out the window.
“And all of this shit is still gonna be here when you’re gone.” Sandra stated firmly.
“Don’t talk to me like that!” Benson yelled, pointing at his daughter.
“Daddy, I was just gonna let you go on drinking, thinking that maybe you’d get tired of it. But it’s just escalating.”
Benson remained quiet, as the truth behind Sandra’s words hit home. “I’ll think about getting some help.” Benson said in a somber voice.
“You say that all the time.”
“Look, dammit! Back off!” Benson said then stormed out the living room.
Sandra sat on the sofa hugging herself, thinking what steps she should take. She noticed Benson’s car keys on the sofa. She picked them up, took them in her room and hid them.
