Chapter 12

Nick forced himself to concentrate on the woman at his side, trying to forget those frigging voices. As soon as this job was over, he would find the best shrink in New York City. Why was he obsessed with a hunk of metal he'd found in some old ruins, and why were people—probably dead people, if they'd ever actually existed at all— talking in his head?

He had to hold on until his employer and her granddaughter were safe and permanently established in Ballybronagh. Then he could take the evidence, put Fazzini's ass in jail, and get help. For now, the thing to do was keep his mind off the voices. And the best way to do that was to turn all his attention on Maggie Mulligan.

Seduction. That's what he needed to think about. He wanted her and something kept stopping him from following through even when he had an invitation. Well, no more of that. He swallowed the lump in his throat, remembering how sweetly she'd invited him into her cottage last night.

Tonight, he had to make sure history repeated itself. Or maybe some afternoon delight was in order. Oh, yes, he'd definitely enjoy making love to Maggie in the daylight. This misty, crappy weather was perfect for cuddling up with a beautiful, sexy woman.

Maybe they could skip lunch....

His stomach rumbled audibly and Maggie laughed. Busted, Desmond. Okay, so he needed to keep up his strength.

"Hungry, are we?" She slipped her arm through his as they neared Gilhooley's.

"Ravenous." He glanced down at her, deliberately keeping his expression as intense as his libido. He wanted her to know he meant business—that his hesitance had passed.

Her eyes widened and a blush bloomed in her cheeks. A slow, sexy smile spread across her face. "I... I'm hungry, too." Her voice sounded a little breathy.

"Mmm." He couldn't wait. "Do you mind if we have lunch somewhere more... private?"

She stopped mid step and turned to face him. The uncertainty he'd seen last night was still there, but not as strong as the naked desire shining in her beautiful blue eyes. He wouldn't push too hard—that wasn't his style—but he would definitely encourage her some.

"I want to make love to you, Maggie Mulligan."

She brought her fingertips to her lips and he heard her swallow. The urge to kiss her long and hard slammed into him, but even though the swirling mist gave the illusion of privacy, Nick reminded himself they were standing in the middle of Ballybronagh.

"I have some soup we can warm at my cottage," she whispered.

With a nod, he took her arm again and tucked it closer to his side, while his heart and other parts of his anatomy thundered in unison. "Sounds perfect."

They walked back the way they'd come, past Donovan Cottage, past the schoolhouse, past the church, and the cliffs where they'd kissed more than once. No voices called to Nick now, except the one from his body that no man could ignore regarding sexual matters.

And this was a supremely sexual matter.
