How can a man who risks his life to save others be terrified of an animal no bigger than his arm? In this case, the animal is barely bigger than my palm, and still, I’m nervous about picking Squirt up.

“You’re a natural,“ Bree says, smiling. We set up a little cat sanctuary in a corner of my living room since these little guys need feeding every three to four hours.

“I wish I felt like a natural,” I say, taking a seat on my couch and placing the kitten belly down on top of the towel that Bree places across my thighs. When I’m settled, she hands the miniature bottle filled with cat formula to me.

“It’s normal to feel nervous when you’re dealing with something so small and fragile,“ she says, taking another kitten out of the box. They're ragdolls, so they have white fur, tiny gray noses, and bright blue eyes. They look more like toys than animals, and I have to admit that their stubby tails and half-grown ears are on the adorable side. Pity they have to grow up.

Cradling my hand under its head the way Bree showed me, I tease Squirt’s mouth with the formula. She latches on like her little life depends on it—and I guess it does—her front paws stretched out and her tail in the air, eyes closed. “She’s a bit of a champ, this one,” I say, glancing at Bree who is smiling wide at me.

I can tell what she’s thinking—that her plan is working. Right now, I can’t say one way or the other. I just know that at this size, I’m not afraid. I have no idea what will happen when their teeth come in and they start jumping all over the furniture with their claws out. I shudder.

“Trace said that one was the pickiest eater of them all,” she says, cradling her kitten like it’s second nature.

“You’re just saying that so I think I’m a cat whisperer,” I say, flashing her a grin.

“I’m not. Even I had trouble getting her to eat when we got them home. She wanted none of it.” Home. Why do I like hearing her say that so much?

“Well in that case,” I say, setting the now-empty bottle on the coffee table. “I suppose I can be in charge of feeding this one.”

“I think she’ll like that,” Bree says as she watches me rub the kitten’s milk-swollen tummy to help it digest.

When I glance down at Squirt, it looks like she’s smiling. I smile too. “How about that?” I say. “I guess she really does like me.”

“I know someone else who likes you too,” Bree says as she places her kitten back in the box and picks up the final one for its feed.

“Is it Gigi?” I tease. “I hear that woman has a thing for younger men.”

“No. It’s not Gigi.” She giggles. “But if you stick around, I might show you who it is.”

“In case you haven’t noticed, this is my house. I think I’ll be sticking around.
